6. Cancer Screening and Cardiac Diagnostics

Cancer is a ubiquitous disease that affects everyone, directly or indirectly. We are far from fully understanding this heterogeneous disease – no two cancers are exactly alike – and further still from “curing cancer.” But we aren’t helpless. In this module, we go deep into the science and statistics of cancer screening. It turns out Medicine 2.0 might be leaving a lot on the table when it comes to getting as much out of the available technology as possible. In addition to focusing on cancer screening, this module will also briefly cover a few of the non-lab cardiac diagnostic tests available to help us understand our risk of ASCVD, explaining their use cases, risks, and benefits.

Learning Objectives

  • What are some important ways Medicine 3.0’s utilization of screening technologies differs from Medicine 2.0’s?
  • Why is it important to emphasize that we’re discussing the use of these tools from the perspective of an individual rather than a societal point of view?
  • Why do we believe in the importance of aggressive cancer screening?
  • Why is it important to consider the question, ‘What costs are you willing to bear to catch cancer earlier?’
  • What inputs go into developing your personalized cancer screening plan?
  • What are the primary tools at our disposal for ASCVD screening and which do we prefer to use to refine our understanding of ASCVD risk?
